“I know who you think of when you look at me.”
Daniel pauses, in shock at the quiet words spoken in an even quieter room. He’s only pulling his underwear up his legs after a shower, Charles is still stark naked in bed with his knees drawn up. He’s looking out the window at the night sky, arms wrapped around his legs in a vulnerable way.
“But sometimes I wish you didn’t,” Charles admits, his voice cracking. “I wish you could look at me and see something other than a second chance. I wish you could see me for who I am.”
“Charles,” Daniel says, walking over to the bed where Charles’ gaze is still directed to the sky. His body is shaking slightly. Daniel doesn’t know if it’s from tears or the cold chill in the room. “I see you. I do.”
“You don’t,” he says firmly.

“I don’t know,” He finds himself staring at another picture. Max is laughing brightly, to the point where his eyes are crinkled, and his mother is smiling too. There is a navy cap on her head: it is a Red Bull cap. Max’s Red Bull cap. “It’s just hard to imagine, I think.”
Pascale looks at him. For a moment it is an odd look. But that quickly melts into a smile. One that is gentle around the eyes, and soft on the mouth. Somehow, it makes Charles feel young again — younger than how he already feels; twenty-one in a world where he is twenty-five.
“You don’t have to imagine it, mon garçon,” she says quietly. “It has already happened.”
