Why? I asked him, and that was the crux of it all, wasn’t it? Why these games- why me, specifically?
Because you let me in, he said. And that was enough.
I didn’t feel real, in that moment, as though he had swapped with me and now I was the apparition.
And what happens, I finally asked, voice weak, what happens if I stop playing?
Well. I wouldn’t try it, he said. And he began walking away, because that was the end of it, and I saw that he didn’t step over the cracks and I wondered if he ever really had. -
