“Suit yourself,” Hazel says through her kettle corn. She wasn’t about to get between PJ and her own thoughts. Her eyes wander as they climb upwards, taking in the rest of the fair and the speckled dots of people spread throughout. “You think there’s better out there for us?”
PJ’s briefly caught off guard, twisting her rings around her fingers, and she looks anywhere but Hazel. “I mean, yeah, there’s gotta be, right?” She shrugs. “There’s always hotter, more attractive, you know, fitter.”
“You just said the exact same thing three fucking times,” Hazel points out, but it’s more of an afterthought, her mind on the meaning behind PJ’s words. It’s shallower than a tub of Krogers Vanilla ice cream, and usually, that doesn’t bother Hazel, but right now, it does. Maybe, it’s the weed, maybe it’s the Maybelline clear mascara Brittany insists she uses to corral her ‘less than ideal’ eyebrows, but she scowls, her knee bouncing as she starts to talk. “What about kinder? Nicer? Maybe people who share more principles in common with you?”
PJ scoffs, but it doesn’t feel like her heart’s in it. “That stuff doesn’t matter. You know that.”

Mike feels more than a little nervous. Max's dares can be pretty brutal, but her truths are worse, and Mike is wary of giving her ammunition. He takes a steadying swig of his beer and sits up straight even if his palms are a little sweaty.
"Dare," he says.
He’s not expecting it when instantly, she says,
“I dare you to kiss Will.”
Mike chokes on his beer. He starts coughing hard, and someone thumps him on the back, but Mike doesn’t even really notice. He stares at Max with wide eyes, shocked.
