And now Changbin is here, remembering it all as though the feelings belong to him. He presses the heel of his hands into his eyes. He hates this. God, he hates this. It feels cruel. He fought so hard to leave this person behind, the possibility of Chaebin. He had clawed his way toward Changbin with shaking hands and stubborn hope and years of work, and now, every night, something is dragging him backward and making him live the life he escaped, making him feel every quiet compromise, every forced smile, every tiny surrender that accumulates into an entire existence. He wraps his arms around himself, but it doesn’t help. His body doesn’t feel like his.

He eventually finds it, and steps into place like he never left. Right where the TARDIS should be, where it was. He doesn’t try for food again, or for anything, really. He just… stays. He sits, back pressed to the wall, knees pulled up loosely toward his chest. If he keeps himself here, in this exact spot, it’ll be easier for Chan to find him. He pulls his jacket tighter around himself, curling slightly against the chill that seeps into the pavement. It’s not comfortable, it’s not safe, and it’s not anything he would’ve ever chosen. But it’s temporary, it has to be.
“…you’re coming back,” he whispers, barely audible.

Minho rarely attends the underground markets anymore. Humans chained beneath dim lantern light had lost novelty long ago, and the scent of fear smells stale to him now. The begging, the crying, the bargaining. Nothing new. Tonight had been no different at first. A warehouse beneath the city with rich monsters lounging in velvet chairs while humans stood displayed beneath golden light.
Minho had nearly left, but then he saw him. Not the most beautiful human there, and definitely not the rarest. But strange. A boy seated quietly in the back corner of the platform while the others around him trembled openly. No tears or pleading present on his face. The human sat still.
The seller had grabbed the human’s jaw harshly, forcing his face upward for inspection. “This one’s obedient, quiet. Doesn’t cause trouble.”
The human had looked more annoyed than frightened, and that’s what sold him.

Summary
When Jungkook, a beta, is tasked with taking care of Taehyung during his preheat, he's determined to do it well. He desperately wants to show his boyfriends, his pack, that he can do a good job- that he can be good. He feeds Taehyung by hand, keeps him hydrated, obediently fetches pain medications and lets himself be used as a human teddy bear. Anything to make the preheat easier.
But then...suddenly, Jungkook can't stop thinking about how the nest Taehyung built is all wrong. The omega is asleep, but he wouldn't mind if Jungkook fixed it, right? Just moved some of these blankets into the right spot, where it's so much cozier? Maybe he'd even be happy, proud that Jungkook knows just how to fix the nest for them both to share. Sure he's ignoring the burning heat in his stomach, the dizziness floating behind his eyes, but that's not important. The nest is important. It has to be safe, has to be perfect.
When Taehyung wakes up to a completely different nest, a sick packmate, and an unfamiliar scent, he realizes Jungkook /might/ not be a beta anymore.

Jimin brandished his spoon at Jungkook hotly, still in conversation with Hoseok, and said, “Being Unpresented isn’t rare, look at Kookie.”
And Jungkook replied, “I’m not Unpresented, I’m an Omega.”
On any other day Taehyung losing juice through his nose would have been funny.
