A pit opens up in Stan’s stomach. He doesn’t want to go to New York either. He doesn’t say anything, and Ford groans.
“Stanley,” he presses. “We need to stop somewhere.”
Stan tries to find a reason, even if just for himself, that he doesn’t want to go. He had good memories there, for the most part. She was young, in her prime, going to bars every night and sleeping with whoever she wanted. She was happy.
Finally, he shrugs. “Yeah. Do what you gotta do.”

It's his reflection. Lan Wangji can look at it for as long as he wants. It's just boring to do so. Who really likes staring at their reflection, anyway? It's normal to finish your mirror-related tasks as quickly as possible and then move on.
Lan Wangji attempts to move on, and the itch under his skin climbs all the way up into his skull to attack his brain. He watches his reflection as his posture shifts, his shoulders softening and curling in slightly, one of his hips cocking to add a curve to his spine. He lets his hand settle lightly on his hip, drawing more attention to the curve, and twists his torso so there's more of a contrast between the indent of his waist and the sway of his hip, tipping his head so his hair drapes further down over his shoulder. He meets his own eyes and for just an instant he sees someone else, someone softer, someone prettier—
Heart hammering, Lan Wangji rips himself away from the mirror and towels off his hair with shaking hands.

Wow this surprised me. A thoughtful and refreshingly direct commentary on colonial violence and its afterlife. The characters of ATLA are well-utilized to show different perspectives and experiences of grief and horror after such loss, all while mundane life marches on, determined to ignore what it can and maintain its status quo. It’s calmly, quietly devastating and a powerful continuation of the original story’s themes. Idk man, this fic really hit for me - it articulates the ongoing weight of colonialism on those it touches so gracefully and with painful clarity. It’s always wonderful to find a fanwork that enhances the original text like this.

Yet he finds himself helping his protagonist son's adoptive mother anyway. Just this one change won't matter too much, right?
One little change leads to more. Shang Qinghua never meant to care, but he becomes invested in making sure that his new family survives the looming plot. With the changes to the world cascading around him, with his position as a traitor pulling him between his sect and a certain ice demon, and with the protagonist growing up so quickly, how is one displaced author meant to ensure that everything turns out all right?
