Agott hated parties.
It wasn't something she liked as a child, but after what happened at her debut seven years ago, she tried to avoid parties with witches from the Great Hall or else the whispering would just get worse.
But she knew there was no avoiding this one. It was tradition that witches their age and about to do their fourth test participate in the mingling, which the Wise of Teachings usually held. It felt rude to reject the invitation not only from one of the Wise but also from the man who taught her professor.

In hindsight, it should have been obvious. The way Rumi refused to go to the bathhouse, her bizarre relationship with Celine, this whole thing with the Saja Boys? Mira prided herself on reading people, and she felt stupid for not seeing it sooner. The pieces were all there, just waiting to be put together.
Rumi was gay.
The night after the joint signing with the Saja Boys, Mira went to confront Rumi about her ongoing weird behavior. Instead of letting hurt feelings drive the conversation, Mira took a minute to try and figure out what might be wrong. Unfortunately, she came to the completely wrong conclusion.
Misunderstandings ensue. They talk it out.
For better or worse, everything changes.

This is what happened: years ago, Mira and Zoey had someone, and then they lost her.

People disappear.
But years ago, Mira and Zoey had someone, and then they lost her. Then, they thought that they might have found her again – because Rumi was everything they once had, because she was the third hunter, because her soul was bound to theirs like they were to each other.
They never asked, in the end.
What had happened that made the other woman slip away like she did.
But it never did feel completely right, after, despite everything. Because Rumi was there but she also wasn’t, because she laughed and joked with them but never quite fully, because she would lean into their touch sometimes and then shrink away from it the next moment. Because she had walls all around her, and rarely, if ever, took them down.
Rumi had always been scared of something.

(Or: the bond between the hunters tells them of each others emotions, each others pain. Rumi, naturally, decides that her sins are hers alone to carry, that she cannot burden the other two with them. But such secrets rarely stay hidden.)
