Summary
Bobby has been dead for four months, and Buck is drowning.
Buck struggles to balance his own grief with the haunting burden of Bobby's final request. The only person Buck feels truly understands him is May, another one of Bobby's kids set adrift by his loss. Desperate for space to drop the mask he's been wearing since Bobby died, Buck flees LA on a solo road trip. The 118 are nosey bastards, but Buck refuses to disclose his the details of his trip. It's May he confides in; May he trusts to have his back while he's gone and not to let the rest of their found family chase after him.
Part nostalgia, part pilgrimage, Buck seeks solace in the vast wilderness of Montana. Among the mountains and lakes Buck finally allows himself to breathe. To feel. To remember. To shift some of the crushing weight he's been carrying. But all the hiking and reflecting in the world won't prepare Buck for what he finds when he gets to Minnesota, and Bobby's final resting place.
This is a story about grief, loss, isolation, doubt; and, ultimately, a man chasing a final goodbye to the only real father he's ever known.

Summary
Bobby closes out the shift as fast as he can. Between Narcissus guy, the park landscaper, and the retirement community meth lab he’s got plenty of paperwork to do. So he updates FireStat, briefs the B-shift captain, and drives home still in uniform; all with Buck’s pre-dinner speech playing on a loop in his head.
"I’m gonna put in for a transfer…Ravi is ready to fill the spot...E-everything feels broken now, and it’s my fault. I’m the reason he’s gone."
Bobby had been so focused on Harry and Athena, that he hadn’t seen what was happening in his other house.
He hadn’t seen Buck.
Buck quietly distancing himself, hyper focusing on Ravi’s training, and subtly spiraling down a rabbit hole of guilt and self-recrimination.
And Bobby didn’t notice.
He searches his memory for the last time he and Buck did something together, just the two of them. It takes a disconcertingly long time, and Bobby comes up empty. This kid who means the world to him, this kid who crashed into his life and taught him not only how to love again but how to live again; and he can’t remember.

“They found Captain America, the Captain America… the legend himself.” The Captain’s thawing had brought up an entire wealth of emotional baggage Tony had thought he’d buried long ago.
