    Summary

Saturday mornings were slower these days. Coffee brewing, egg whites whisked, and the happy tapping of puppy paws on polished, hard wood floors. They were gentle kisses, good mornings, and promising caresses. It had taken Shane and Ilya about thirteen years to get to this state of domesticity, something that the pair would have viewed as impossible maybe only five years ago. Two years of marriage will do that.

They were still learning what is was to love freely. Angry fans and homophobic players would still be there, but they became background noise. They didn’t need to prove themselves to anyone. Saying “I love you” wasn’t the scary admission it had been all those years ago. Russia was no longer a threat, anxieties were communicated, and the only real fears they shared were the exciting ones.

What did the next two years look like?

Would we wait to retire before taking the next step?

What does the adoption process look like?

Do we know anyone who would want to be a surrogate?

"I do not," Shane said, which was a lie. "And you should reflect on why you like to make your boyfriend upset so often."

"My boyfriend likes to be upset," Ilya said. He was leaning fully over into Shane's space now, his elbow on the center console bearing so much of his weight as he swayed, almost accidentally closer. He was giddy, childish, how had he forgotten how good it felt to be with Shane, just to be next to him and talk –

"Is there a rest stop coming up?" Natalya asked from the backseat, and Ilya didn't flinch, exactly, but it was a near thing. He'd almost forgotten she was there.

    Summary

    Year one: season 2021-2022.

    Hello.

I’m Luca Haas. Ottawa Centaurs right winger, Swiss, twenty-two years old, and currently dealing with what I would describe as an unfortunate amount of personal situations.

First of all, Shane Hollander joined the Ottawa Centaurs.

Second of all, Shane Hollander married my captain Ilya Rozanov over the summer.

    Bummer.

Third of all, my apartment caught fire.

Actually that one probably should have been first.

    Anyway.

The newlyweds offered me a place to stay with them while everything gets sorted out. I felt obliged to agree since my captains offered and the alternative was staying in a hotel forever.

So this is a literary documentation of how I somehow became a temporary roommate in the Hollander-Rozanov household.

    Very temporary.

    I think.

I also started this journal because Ilya said it might help with homesickness and processing things.

Currently processing: my apartment burning down, hockey, annoying newlyweds, increasingly concerning emotions about my captains, and whatever the fuck is happening to my life.

    Summary

Something both Shane and Ilya understood about hockey, that many other players didn’t, was that what separated good players from the greats was the ability and willingness to plan and engage in psychological warfare.

Shane and Ilya went about it in different ways but that didn’t change the fundamental truth: to be the best hockey player was to be ruthless.
