Summary
Charlie knows by now that these kids are brilliant, terrifying, beyond talented--and completely alone, except for him. He's not exactly sure that he's the mentor they deserve, but the Eye sent him here for a reason, right? They must need him.
He might just need them, too.
...
Five times Charlie took care of one of the Horsemen and one time they took care of him.

Summary
He was supposed to do this. To make this work. He was the key to their weird benefactor's whole plan, somehow, the one who was supposed to steal the money and plant it in Thaddeus Bradley's shitty rental car and the one who was supposed to trick the FBI into thinking he was dead, the one who was supposed to unlock the gates to Central Park so the three actual, proven magicians could get in and meet the man behind the curtain, and he didn't. He failed.
He died, and now he's rotting at the bottom of a river along with the rest of New York's trash.
...
Jack Wilder drowns in the East River instead of burning up in a car wreck, and finds himself reborn as something new--and something a little less human.

Summary
"Why did you quit?"
Jack glances toward him after a long moment, deep, dark brown eyes gilded amber in the fading evening light. "Quit what?" he says. There's no real confusion in his voice, only a quiet sort of expectation. He knows what Charlie's asking. He just wants him to say it without dancing around the subject. Fair enough, he guesses, even if it feels kind of rude to spring that on him.
He'll give him an out. "Nothing," he answers, and he pastes on his most rueful, dude-I-idolize-you-and-I'm-not-a-threat grin. "Sorry. I'm just the messenger. We're trying to figure out dinner, and I—"
Jack's eyebrows flick up, skepticism written into every line of his face, and Charlie blows out a sharp breath. "Not buying it, huh?"
"Not particularly."
...
Charlie can't figure out why Jack, of all people, was the first to walk away from the Horsemen. Turns out there's more to the story than anyone knows.

Summary
He presented an argument, like any reasonable, rational person that isn't Merritt McKinney, who walked up to him after an absolutely disastrous debrief with Dylan after officially becoming the Three Horsemen and told him to move in with Daniel.
Someone needs to keep him from spiraling out of control, he'd said bluntly, ignoring Jack's spluttered protests. You're good at that. At reining us in. You're cocky, but you've also been watching us for a long time. You know how we work, and you're good at risk assessment, and you trust your instincts. Danny-boy trusts his instincts too much, and right now his internal compass is pointed right towards self-destruction.
I think it's called a moral compass, Jack said, bewildered.
...
Jack moves into Daniel's safehouse, prevents him from giving himself a truly atrocious haircut, and realizes that, despite Daniel's incredibly pathetic response to the breakup, his stupid feelings aren't going away.

Summary
Merritt McKinney would not consider himself a bad person, per se.
Being mean sometimes was not the same as being an asshole 24/7; after years of experience testing out what constituted going too far, he walked that line very well. As much as he delighted in making people uncomfortable by revealing information garnered via mentalism to the general public, he knew there were lines, boundaries, and things better not shared.
Case in point: Jack Wilder’s childhood.
It wasn’t that Merritt had been intentionally trying to discern what Jack’s life was like before the Horsemen, but the kid kept dropping hints everywhere. It was impossible for Merritt to not pick up on the pattern.
-
Or, 5 times one of the Horsemen realized something fucked up about Jack’s childhood, 3 times (interspersed throughout) that they talked about it with each other, + 1 time they talked about it with Jack.

Summary
“Here’s the deal,” Atlas says, voice clipped and short, stuffing his wallet back into a pocket to let an off-white envelope appear in his palm. “You’ve been robbing people at my show — it’s bad for my reputation. Frankly, I shouldn’t even be talking to you, and the only reason that I am is because I know telling you to stop would only make you double down and do it even more.”
“You don’t know that,” Bosco says determinedly, and Charlie can’t stop the grin on his face as he turns to look at him. Bosco’s always contrarian solely for the sake of it, determined to disagree only because he can, and it would appear that not even meeting one of their biggest idols could stop him. “We could totally still be rational people.”
“You pick pockets at pop-up magic shows,” Atlas says derisively, “you’re not rational people in the slightest. I know you’re getting a pretty good score, and me asking you to stop while offering no incentive is practically useless. So, here — I’m paying you to quit robbing my audience. Now, begone.”
—
After the Horsemen break up, J. Daniel Atlas isn't doing very well — until three kids keep robbing his audience. Somehow, they grow on him.

Summary
Do they know? Does Atlas? He has to, at least somewhat. He had the audacity to talk like he knew her when they first met, when he brought up the 'boarding schools'. She wasn't June Roquelaure back then; he knew who she used to be.
She had been June McClure, from New Orleans.
An exploration of how June met Charlie and Bosco, got to New York, had her life changed by strangers, yelled at the Horsemen, escaped an abusive boarding school, and robbed a mall. Not necessarily in that order.

Summary
Bosco LeRoy is having a monumentally shitty day.
First, he wakes up late, which wasn’t a problem when it was just him, Charlie, and June, but it’s not just them anymore, it’s them and the Horsemen. The goddamn Horsemen. He might’ve put on a show of nonchalance when Atlas first appeared in their hideout, but holy shit was it hard to keep a lid on it. He’s been idolizing J. Daniel Atlas since middle school, and there he was right in front of him, offering them not only a job but a chance to do something beyond swindling egotistical crypto bros and finance jerks. The last thing he wanted to do was to come off as an overzealous kid having bitten off more than he could chew, and now that he’s been welcomed into the Eye’s ranks that pressure has increased tenfold. So, waking up late? Out of the question. He would not have Atlas or Dylan or any of the other Horsemen thinking he wasn’t taking this opportunity seriously.

Summary
He's a sellout in a stupid suit, doing shows for rich idiots on a cruise ship. Jack used to be cool; he used to be kind of like her, stealing from tourists to survive before becoming a part of something bigger. Now, he looks like he's going to start telling her to stay in school and don't do drugs.
Or, June slowly accepts that Jack is actually pretty chill. Also, she has an inexplicable urge to beat his ass. She's pretty sure this is what it feels like to have an older brother.
