Trees rustled behind him impatiently, their forms slowly losing life, ready for winter.His face grew wet with tears crawling their way down his cheeks. His heart pounded in his chest, his face warm and breathing fast. Even after all this, he was scared. He wanted this, he had wanted this for years.
He’d spent weeks preparing for this moment. Saying his goodbyes, giving out possessions, teaching what he knew. He hugged Klee, he thanked Jean, he apologised to Diluc. He was ready, he was calm. This was it.

Every morning, Kaeya Alberich wakes up to gentle sunlight drifting through gaps between curtains. Every morning, he wakes up to the taste of wine on his tongue, to a weight on his chest, tapping a rhythm far too fast. To his hands shaking, head throbbing and an overwhelming sense of dread.
A familiar routine, however horrible it is.
His eyes shift around his room, the walls bare, the decor basic and lifeless. He never did get around to decorating. He’s a busy man, after all. Always moving, always stirring the waters, lest the river bed holds something he doesn't wish to see.

The side of his face burned with the heavy feeling of being watched, his eyes snapping up to scan the room.
Slouched in the shadows, arms crossed casually, stood a man, face tilted slightly in Tommy’s direction. Long, deep green robes draped over his figure, pulled in slightly around his waist by a belt, a wide-brimmed hat sat atop his head, a variety of crystals, glass shards and feathers hung delicately from the edge. Tommy blinked for a second, and the man was gone, leaving nothing but an odd feeling lingering in his chest.
He shoved the remains of the bun in his mouth, before leaving as quickly as his long-dead legs could carry him.
Which, admittedly wasn’t all that fast.
He had business to attend to, big man business that definitely did not leave him exhausted, crushed by the pressure of the world on his shoulders. Business that did not, at all, make him want to curl up in a ball and decompose.

An ear-splitting scream rang out through the room- if you could even call it that- bouncing off the abyss that surrounded him.

He sighs and sits beside her carefully. He rests a hand on the back of her head, and despite herself, it’s soothing.
“Just to make sure nothing’s wrong,” he says in a calm, reasonable tone that doesn’t do anything but wind her up. “We can-”
“It’s a period,” she says flatly. “It’s just a bad one.”
“Ell-”
“Do you have a uterus?” She demands. “No? Shut the fuck up then.”
It’s way more aggressive than she’d usually get with him, but there’s no goddamn way she’s going to the clinic, especially just to have a doctor laugh at her for being freaked out by a period.
It took her weeks to get out of the hospital in Salt Lake, and that was for the sake of creating the cure they brought back with them.
Hopping right back into another one? And for some stupid period cramps?
No fucking way.

Of course, if one wants to put out a flame they douse it in water. However, how can one do that when they don’t even notice the burning in the first place?
Not everyone can smell the smoke before they realize that something has caught fire. It was like that for Kaeya Alberich.
