    Summary

Simon wouldn’t meet his eyes, but Grace was close enough to see his resolve breaking. He could see how desperately Simon wanted to give in. And he was suddenly, painfully aware of how close they were standing to one another.

“I don’t trust it,” Simon said. “My hunger–”

“I’m not trusting your hunger. I’m trusting you.”

‘How are you winning this?’ Tim demands without any petulance as another round of coppers clatter from the shelf into the pot by Jon’s knee. ‘No one wins at this!’

    They are doing ‘research’, supposedly.

    Summary

There was nothing, nothing in this whole, entirely vast universe, as perfect as Ryland Grace’s mouth.

Simon knew himself to be good for close to nothing.
But one thing he'd always excelled at was the act of worship.
He’d long said goodbye to purpose as he’d known it.
If his new direction in life, his singular, daily task was the endless, mindless veneration of his Savior, the adoration of the singular star in his vast, dark sky, he would find comfort in it.
More than that, he’d find pleasure in it.

Or about how Simon confesses (sort of) and things take an unexpected turn.

"Well, yeah, but there's nothing wrong with how you look." Martin says it casually, almost reflexively, like the thought came so naturally to him that putting it into words required no effort at all. There's a long, unpleasant pause.

    "...Martin."

"Shit, sorry, that was so not the right way to say that-"

“Proof of concept,” ♫♬♯♩♩♫ says. “We’ve tested it thoroughly to ensure it fits the specified nutritional profile, and several members of our team have ingested small amounts of it to ensure there were no adverse effects.”

“You ate some of it?” I ask, rudely. I’m too irate to mind my language. Who do they think they are? That meat is for Grace. In a way, that meat is Grace.

“Yes,” ♫♬♯♩♩♫ says. They and the rest of the human life support thrum know better than to be offended by my occasionally strange behaviour. “Obviously we weren’t going to risk the life of Honoured Grace on a completely untested technology.”

That doesn’t mean much. There’s a lot of things that are safe for ingestion by Eridians that would outright kill a human.

Trust Grace, I remind myself. He’ll have thought of all this.

(OR: Grace's meburgers from the book epilogue. Let's talk about those!)
