They’d made the Holiday Arrangement in an effort to each avoid being asked, again, why they hadn’t brought a date. Brienne would go to his family party, then Jaime would follow her here, to Tarth, for Selwyn’s annual Long Night celebration. They hadn’t pretended to be together, he’d always introduced her as a friend, but Brienne’s presence had made everything a little more palatable.
Brienne was the person he understood best, the first constant that he’d called his own–his friend, Brienne.
But she was sitting across from him in the darkened booth, wearing a stupid light-up sweater that matched the one he wore, peeling the label from her beer and acting like a stranger.
It made his head hurt. It made his chest ache.
