Now that hunger isn’t clawing at his belly, he can more easily appreciate her luscious form as it hovers in his line of sight. He drinks in the way the flickering light of the tavern casts shadows across her breasts with every inhale and exhale, how the bodice of her dress lifts them up as if to cradle her chin.
He considers it to be one of his greatest failures that he doesn’t know what it feels like to bury his face between them – to fill his hands with their softness.

He had watched Olivia complain her way through every winter they worked together, muttering about crime scenes in February and stakeouts where the heat in the sedan took too long to kick in, glaring at the wind like it had chosen her personally.
Maybe she likes the cold now. Maybe that is one of the hundred small, ordinary things that changed about her over the past decade, the kind of thing he would notice had he been there to watch it happen.
He takes his jacket from the rack by the door and pulls it on without looking away from her. Then he opens the glass door and steps out into the cold.

Summary
Physical touch with him always felt a bit incongruous to their relationship, though never unpleasant. She welcomed it as an unexpected, familiar presence, like the smell of sunscreen at nighttime. Gentle and somehow nostalgic.
This time it wasn’t her arm. He was beside her on a hard faux-leather bench, and when he reached for her, his hand found the lowest part of her thigh, just before it curved over the precipice of her kneecap. It was heavy, jolting and then grounding as her pulse hammered in her throat, as her stomach turned, as her breath came fast and harsh and she clasped her hands together to keep from shaking.
He kept it there until long after Amy Hogan was pronounced dead.
