Simon has never been good with kids. When a child appears out of thin air in his submarine and the COI still refuses to pull him up, all Simon can do is protect her from the horrors of the ocean. Even if he knows there's not much hope for either of them to live.
Ryland Grace is living his best life on Erid. He has a wonderful best friend, scientific colleagues who respect him, and students who adore him. Unless he decides to make the journey back to Earth, however, he doesn't expect to see another human any time soon. He certainly wasn't expecting to stumble upon a traumatized father and daughter welded into a blood-filled submarine.

Ryland Grace unfortunately became important at work. His boss, Director Eva Stratt, moved him back to the states right after a three-month sabbatical to help Ava Ironchild with a strange issue. Her sanctuary has been struggling with a recent arrival, and someone needs to step in. Grace, for a reason he doesn't understand whatsoever, was the first person Eva thought of to deal with this... at least he gets to see his old friends?

So as best man, he sticks by Rocky’s side in every meeting, every decision. He helps the couple choose the ‘vibe,’ goes cake tasting with them, fawns at beautiful bouquets and decorations, and even flirts with Mr. Simon Fleischer the wedding planner.

“What are you talking about?” Grace's fingers played quick chords as he spoke. He didn’t even look as he did it, but it did not make them any less purposeful.
“Discussing possible reasons why Tau Ceti is not infected while other stars are,” Eva replied deftly. “I would invite you to join, but we were just finishing—”
“Oh, that’s easy.” His hand twisted a knob, and the notes came out sharper. “It is infected—Petrova Line and everything.”
In Grace's opinion, dreaming about time traveling is no excuse for getting out of practice with his Eridian. To the rest of the Petrova Taskforce, it seems a bit odd that their resident Astrophage expert has suddenly taken to carrying a keyboard around and playing it whenever he speaks. Eva Stratt resolves to figure out what is going on.
