Summary
“Melissa King.”
He heard Mel huff, pretending to be annoyed. “You know, if it was anyone else saying that, I would think I was in trouble.”
“Yeah, I know. Now are you gonna come to the park with us or not?”
Frank could almost picture the crease between Mel’s eyebrows, that cute little look she got when she was uncertain or confused. It would be nice if she joined them–after all, it was a beautiful day, and although he definitely had it under control wrangling the kids all week, he couldn’t deny that he wouldn’t mind a little company.
Maybe more specifically, in the form of a certain blonde doctor who always managed to brighten his day no matter how shitty things were. Who always managed to command his attention every time she entered a room.

Summary
Mel scoffed, pretending to be offended. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Frank laughed then, loud and joyful, before glancing back at Mel. The light turned green then, and Frank pressed down on the gas to follow the car in front of them through the intersection.
“Are you–?”
“Frank!” Mel gasped as she caught a glimpse of something careening towards them.
He shot a quick glance to his left, throwing an arm out in front of her, faster than she’d ever seen him move. “Shi-”
Then Mel heard a deafening crunch and a crashing sound, and everything went black.

Summary
He wondered what she liked to do in her free time, and that’s when Frank promptly stopped himself before falling into a rabbit hole.
He didn’t even know anything about her. He was supposed to be focusing on himself, not becoming fixated on the first pretty girl who caught his eye.
She probably had a boyfriend, anyway.

Summary
“Are you worried about getting eaten by a bear?” Langdon asked, glancing at her.
“I’m actually more worried about you getting eaten by a bear,” Mel said. “And then me having to tell your wife and kids that I just stood by and watched it happen because I don’t know how to fight a bear. You’re not supposed to fight grizzlies, but I don’t think we’d see one of those here unless it’s really lost, or got loose from the zoo. And black bears, I know you’re supposed to try to stand tall and then find a weapon, but I’m not very tall, and I don’t always have good aim. I mean, sometimes I do, but if I’m trying to fight off a bear, I don’t think I’ll be able to throw very straight.”
Langdon’s head rolled as he listened. “You won’t have to tell my wife and kids that I was eaten by a bear, Mel.”
“You don’t know that,” she said.
“I promise.”

Summary
"Is this what you want?" Mel asked, eyes searching his face so urgently he could barely track them.
Frank sighed, stretching out his neck and closing his eyes. "It's what she wants—"
"You, Frank," Mel interrupted. "I don't care about Abby. What do you want?"
He wet his lips, rubbing them together as he watched her sit with a hand on the door, ready to leave the car at any given moment. Then, he nodded. "Yeah," he said simply. "I want this."
She shook her head, gathering her bag from by her feet and pushing the door open. "Then have it," she said, forcing herself out. "Just don't expect me to watch."

Summary
"Hey, Mel," he offered her, his voice weak. Mel tilted her head to one side. For just a moment, the shadows of the ambulance bay cast a darkness over his left eye like a bruise.
"Hey, Frankie," she whispered.
Frank Langdon looked down at his feet, shaking his head slowly. Mel found herself walking over to him before she had even decided to move. They stood alone, together in the silent bay.
"No one's called me that in… a very long time."
An alternate universe in which 12-year-old Melissa King meets a strange boy in the woods behind her home. Over the course of the carefree summer they spend together, the unlikely friends begin to realize that they needed one another more than they knew. When late August takes a dark turn and the two are separated, seemingly for good, it takes many years and a surprise reunion before the old friends fully understand just how much they changed one another's lives.
