I’m not like, judging you, he said to him, only two days into Warped and in between rounds of Mario Kart on My Chem’s bus, when this thing with Mikey hadn’t quite taken over his whole brain yet, I just like to observe people. It’s kind of like that thing you do when you ask someone twenty questions in one breath. It’s how I learn about you. He remembers even more than his words; the way Mikey had knocked his shoulder into Pete’s right after, and left it there, how he felt like their bodies had clicked into place. The memory is still so vivid, he gets warm just thinking about it.

Summary
The part of Mikey that wants desperately to have a normal life is screaming at him to go inside, to find the pretty girl that had said yes when he got on one knee, that was going to wear a white dress in a couple months while he stared, not at her, but at the pews, mind searching for someone else.
Bile is rising in his throat now at the thought of what was to come in the spring. He wants normalcy so badly, as normal as someone can pretend to be, at least, when you spent your whole adolescence being called a fag, and the rest of your life desperately wanting to prove everyone who called him that wrong. Before this summer, he’d been doing a pretty good job of it. He almost got away with a clean record.

In Mikey’s defense, he hadn’t realized Pete was a reporter until after he had already become inextricably intertwined with him. To try and pull out now would just tighten the knot.
At least that’s what he tells himself.
Or: Spider-Man tries to keep it all together, Gerard yells at a little brother shaped brick wall, Kingpin runs for mayor, and Pete (eventually) connects some dots.
