“Hyunnie!” Beomgyu chirped. His eyes widened when he saw the second coffee in Taehyun’s hand. “Oh my God, is that for me?”
Taehyun handed it to him, and Beomgyu held it like it was his firstborn child. He looked at Taehyun as the younger plopped onto the couch beside him with wide, starry eyes. “I love you, Taehyun,” he said. He sounded completely sincere.
“I know, hyung,” Taehyun replied. “You told me last night. Another drunk voicemail.”
“Oh, did I?” Beomgyu asked, after a long swig of coffee. “Did I pass the five-minute mark this time?”
Taehyun laughed, and opened the box of pastries on his lap. “No, only two and a half.”

Yeonjun hadn’t been intending to snoop, but it wasn’t his fault that Soobin had left his phone face-up within his eye-line while he went to the bathroom. Yeonjun turned his head slightly, taking a surreptitious peek at the screen.

Yeonjun froze, spoonful of cereal pausing halfway to his mouth. He didn’t think that Soobin actually did anything with the numbers he got at music shows and the like, had never considered that maybe Soobin was actually messaging people outside of his group and his small circle of friends. But the exclamation mark. And the winky face. There was no way that was just friendly. That meant that there was only one other possibility, only one logical conclusion that Yeonjun could draw.
Soobin fucks.
And it was sending Yeonjun into a crisis.

Beomgyu wasn’t interested in meeting his soulmate.
Beomgyu wasn’t interested in his soulmate at all, and Taehyun knew this. He was Taehyun’s best friend, after all. Taehyun knew Beomgyu better than anyone else in the world; in fact, their friend group liked to joke that maybe the universe had made some sort of mistake, and given Beomgyu’s matching soul mark to the wrong person.
They were best friends long, long before Taehyun ever got his soul mark. Taehyun had hoped that they would be after, too, at least until he was standing in front of the bathroom mirror that morning. Shaking, trembling all over. Breaths coming out so fast it bordered on hyperventilation. The pad of his thumb brushing over the skin just below his left collar bone, checking to make sure that it was really there. That it was real, not some dream, that he hadn’t been drunker than he thought last night and gotten a tattoo he didn’t remember.
He pressed down on it, hard. Nothing. No pain, like a fresh tattoo would have, and when he lifted his thumb again it was still there.
Beomgyu’s soul mark. A daisy with a single creased petal.

Taehyun raised a hand. “Have any of you ever heard of a ghost mating?”
Beomgyu paused. “No.”
Kai shook his head, too, but then Yeonjun spoke. “Like, when an alpha thinks that an omega is their mate?”
Taehyun pressed his lips together grimly. “For all intents and purposes, they are. Their inner alpha responds the exact same way they would to a mate, feels the same level of bonding and connection. Soobin hyung has always been a little bit… different about you, hasn’t he?”
“Ghost matings are really rare, though,” Yeonjun said.
“I’m just saying that might explain what happened tonight,” Taehyun replied.
“That doesn’t explain shit!” Beomgyu exclaimed, clearly worked up again. “Soobin has a gigantic crush on Yeonjun hyung, so what!? I figured that out years ago–“
“Hang on, hyung,” Taehyun interrupted, putting a gentle hand on Beomgyu’s shoulder. “Just listen. Ghost matings are all internal, right? So when the inner alpha realizes that the connection isn’t reflected externally, it causes a lot of distress. Sometimes that can show itself as the urge to…” Taehyun trailed off, and goosebumps rose on the back of Yeonjun’s neck when they made eye contact. “You know.
