Summary
She stands frozen just outside of Robby’s periphery, so Jack sees her first, head lazily turning to face her, unaware of the havoc wreaked by his unexpected appearance. Helpless, she watches as he, too, processes the impossibility of her in this context, as his brain tries to make sense of what is in front of him. There is a subtle widening of his eyes as they track over her face and her body, a parting of his lips, like he might say something.
No, wracks through her brain, no no no. And maybe he can see the word in her expression, in the stiffening of her posture, or maybe he can still read her mind. Because after a moment, his face carefully contorts back into polite blankness, a sharp relief to the panic she is sure is still etched onto her face.

Summary
Samira knows there are apps to make this kind of thing easier, but she prefers going about it this way. Something about the spontaneity, the idea of leaving it up to fate, makes her feel less guilty about it. She imagines herself filling out an intake form - unhealthy coping mechanisms, check. High risk behavior, check.
or maybe:
Samira has unhealthy coping mechanisms. Jack helps her through it.

Summary
She doesn't know how to approach it, exactly. Knows what she would do if Jack was a patient, a real one, how she'd talk long enough to get her hands on him for an examination. As it is, she's frozen, isn't even sure how to ask. Can I touch you? You're bleeding and also it's all I think about.

Summary
“Long time no see.” He can hear the misplaced anger steeped in every word.
Jack, for his part, doesn’t seem to notice. Although maybe it’s more apt to say that he doesn’t care. Not anymore.
He’s greyer, new smile lines beside his eyes, an ease to him that Robby cannot remember seeing in years - or maybe ever. He has to cut his eyes away when Jack starts to speak. “Well, brother, that’s what happens when people accept it when you say you don’t want help.”
—
It’s been five years since Jack Abbot left Pittsburgh. A lot has changed.
