“Now that you’ve wrapped up your first role, what do you think you’ll do now?”
“Lots of things,” Luda says immediately. “I want to travel. Paris sounds nice. I want to play a villain as my next role. Try that new game I just bought. Maybe even try streaming — the fans would like that, don’t you think?” She shrugs. “I dunno. I’ll do whatever I want.”
To Luda, the future is something full of endless possibilities. Something that’s anticipated, not frightening. Something she can take control of.
“And you?” Luda asks, her eyes bright and curious over her wine glass. “What do you want, Nam Dawon?”
Dawon’s mouth goes dry.

Luda doesn’t need to lift her head from her pillow to see Dawon’s incredulous expression. “Kim Jiyeon,” she says, voice muffled.
“Like…that Kim Jiyeon?”
“That Kim Jiyeon."
Kim Jiyeon, as in the resident campus crush. Everyone knows Kim Jiyeon. In fact, her face was plastered all over campus last year as she had scored a supporting role in a major drama — her first in what is likely going to be a long list.

She blanches at the last possibility, thinking that there’s nothing worse than having to work on a project, much less working on a project with Jeon Heejin.
“You guys are the Chosen Ones this year!”
Hyunjin’s eyes widen in horror as soon as she processes the words, knowing the exact meaning behind them and wishing she didn’t. She takes it all back — she’d rather do a project. She’d rather do a hundred projects instead of this.

Luda had always possessed a gift for knowing each intricate gear of this desolate world. She had witnessed the unveiling of a thousand criminals on the run and memorized the mantra of cause, action, and effect. But at that moment, with the moonlight casting haunting patterns on Jiyeon's exhausted smiling face and landing on her regal sword, fighting unknown forces, she no longer knew what to think of the world she presumed to know so well.
