Cocaine was somehow everywhere in Shane’s life, at every party, in every pre-season lecture from coaches, in every post-season warning, every wild story the guys told to tempt the rookies into pleasure and scare them into line. And yet, Shane didn’t actually know much about it. He was too chicken, too prudish, maybe. He thought he was too good to ever need to know. Maybe Rozanov was right.
“Okay.” Ilya’s agreement startled Shane from his thoughts. “My Jane… she is good lay, mm? The best, maybe. And she doesn’t like coke, not even for fun. So, I will not do it. One year. Sure, Jessica is just a friend, and Lily isn’t even a girl, and the girls he meets in clubs and bars never get his phone number, but he’s trying. He just hasn’t met the right girl yet. Someone who can tolerate his lifestyle. Who doesn’t see him as just a friend. A girl who fits right.
He knows he’s not really trying, because he’s got Rozanov a few times a year and the sex is so great that everything else pales in comparison. But hooking up with Rozanov isn’t the same as having a girlfriend. He’s just delaying the inevitable.
Or, comphet is one helluva drug.

“Yuna,” Ilya says, and he tries very hard to not look at Shane, to not see the unforgiving, enduring hurt in his eyes when he looks over at his mother, so far away from her that he can’t come home, even though he desperately wants to. He looks at Yuna instead, and somehow, even as he braces against the ice-cold concrete and lets the sound of the whistling wind settle in his ears and has been looking at her for a long time now, he finds himself entirely unprepared for familiar Yuna’s eyes will be when she turns her gaze from the distant streetlamp to him. “You’re very lucky too.”
Shane Hollander is a ghost with a comatose body that won't work, unable to move on because his mom won't come visit him. Ilya Rozanov is the only person who can see and hear him, and against all odds, this is still a love story.
