Lan Wangji thought that he had successfully pushed his childhood crush out of his mind. Coming face to face with said crush during a mating run makes him realise that he never forgot about Wei Wuxian, even after he became the fearsome Yiling Laozu. What's more, after Wei Wuxian almost claims him as his mate, he finds that he was waiting all along for a reason to follow Wei Wuxian and stay by his side.
The newly-founded Yiling sect needs any help it can get to develop so Lan Wangji decides to follow Wei Wuxian back to the Burial Monds to make his dream a reality. There, he finds Jiang Wanyin, whom he has not seen since the war and who acts strangely in Lan Wangji's presence.
