Like the clashing of blades, your gazes meet in a charged impasse. “’Be my ally’,” you amend, brandishing the weapon of your stare, refusing to back down from the weight of his challenge.
Satan inclines his head, expression untranslatable. “If you insist.”
And although the poem you parse does indeed feature both the voice of the poet, as well as the deity invoked in the stanzas, you know that this final quip of Satan’s cannot be found in the lines of the original text. Somehow, you have a hard time believing that the eldritch horror would give in so easily to the demands of a mere mortal.
The duality of infernal wrath and covert submission is a combination entirely unique to Satan.
