Summary
He learns that Oda was a kind man, taking in a group of orphans having the owner of his favorite restaurant provide them shelter, with him providing the financial support and coming to visit them frequently. The children loved him, Dazai says, but the few times Dazai himself interacted with them, they weren't quite as fond of him at first.
At this point, there is a conclusion to be drawn, between Dazai and the man who loved children, who cared for those who had no one by their side and who, very clearly, left such an impression on Dazai that he would visit the man's grave every year, without fail. Doppo doesn't voice it aloud, but Dazai knows he's put the pieces together.
Every year on the same day, Dazai skips work without telling anyone why.
This year, Kunikida decides to take matters into his own hands and investigate.
