Summary
It took Steve months after he was woken up from the ice to realize the only time touching was easy was when he was fighting. At first he thought it was just being lost in the new world, but finally he had to admit it was more than that. There was something that had fundamentally changed in him.
People looked at him like he was a marvel, and he listened and didn’t contradict them when they gushed over him coming through the decades of stasis unchanged. He knew he hadn’t. Seventy years in ice had left its mark.
It was easier with Bucky, up until it wasn’t.

So maybe sending out a text saying, “In the hospital, talk to you later” is not the best thing to send to someone out of context. But, to be fair, Bucky hadn’t had his coffee for the day so there isn’t a lot of higher brain function going on until that happens. This also explains why, when Captain America comes busting into his hospital room with wild eyes all Bucky says is, “What the hell do you want?”

Summary
Magical Realism AU where demons exist and Steven was an angel lured to Lucifer's side in the war in Heaven. After the war, they threw him down into Hell, no longer an angel, but a demon.
Some humans know demons exist, summoning them out of Hell to use as weapons. Desperate to escape Hell, Steven answers a summons only to find himself bound to serve HYDRA. When they send him to possess Agent Peggy Carter, the encounter doesn't go as HYDRA expects and Steven is set free to roam the earth.
Sixty years later, frantic to escape another summons, willing to do anything to stay unbound, he takes refuge inside the killer sent to slaughter the summoner. The killer has a metal arm and a mind like broken glass and Steven soon discovers he isn't the only one hiding inside of it: he finds the man the killer's body belongs to. Fragile and lost, the more Steven seeks him out the stronger he becomes, until the day he remembers his name: Bucky. Determined to protect him, Steven will do everything in his power to set him free and keep him that way.
(Chronologically, this stretches from before Captain America: First Avenger to a year or so before the first Avengers movie but has spoilers for Civil War.)

“Real life, huh?” A voice says.
Steve looks up and sees a man dressed an elf. Red suspenders with a red and white striped shirt tucked into soft, green pants. A red and green hat sits on top of his head and he has dark hair that’s pulled into a small bun. A volunteer, Steve supposes. He’s making a cup of coffee and when he turns, Steve notices his piercing, blue-grey eyes and sharp jaw.
“What?” Asks Steve, not sure he means.
The elf casually dumps some creamer into his coffee and stirs while he says, “You’re a superhero. You show up and save the day from catastrophic disaster and then return to your Tower until the next alien attack or whatever. Meanwhile, real life continues and real life is shitty. Horrible things happen every day and yes, children suffer.”
“I understand that,” Steve says.
“You of all people should,” the elf comments.

Sure, he hadn’t seen Bucky in months, and sometimes he was at the punching bag so long that his skin started to peel off to expose the bones of his fingers, and sometimes he couldn’t find the energy to drag himself out of bed, and sometimes he went weeks without sleeping, and sometimes he thought about throwing himself head-first off the nearest tall structure, but he was fine.

Bucky had been careful, after all, leaving no trace of his comings and goings. It was horrendously disappointing to know that Rogers had found him. Bucky was a lot better than getting caught by a guy who wore the American flag as a onesie. He just really was.
“Don’t you – Bucky – Bucky,” Rogers started, and to Bucky’s growing horror, it looked like Rogers was on the verge of some type of emotional eclipse. Anger, sadness, something, and Bucky wanted nothing to do with it.
