Mike thinks it all started the day the Byers moved into their house.
Having sold their house in Hawkins a year and a half prior and moved to California, when they came back, and the town got put in lockdown, they didn’t have a place to go.
Mike had kindly offered up their place during dinner.

The 18-month gap between s4 and s5 told from Mike's POV with minor other POV's as the story progresses. The gap has been lengthened to encapsulate more time passing. They start at 16, but by chapter 6 they're 17 1/2 with them turning 18 chapter 32/34.

"Will picked it!" Dustin said, holding his hands up.
"Because it's awesome," Will said as he handed the bottle of sunscreen to Max.
"Mike, you need to rub that shit in, you look insane," Max said to Mike, whose face was covered in streaks of sunscreen.
Mike glared at her, while Will laughed and gestured for him to come closer so he could help. He carefully rubbed the rest of the lotion into Mike’s skin, then pressed a quick kiss to his lips. Mike gave him a dopey smile.
"You guys are disgusting," Dustin said matter-of-factly.Or: The party takes a trip to the beach.

Summary
For the first time in four years, Will Byers is free. The grip the upside-down had on him has been relinquished, and he and his friends can live out the few months of childhood they have left.
But nothing is quite right: Lucas is but a shell of a person, Dustin has forgotten his girlfriend of two years, and Mike? Mike Wheeler, the heart of the group, has been a ghost of who he was for a long, long time.
And it's not just his old party: Robin, Jonathan, Hopper, Nancy, even his Mom, the same woman who would not rest till she found the truth all those years ago, glaze over their final battle like it was nothing.
A final fight that was too easy, a flickering reality of a town, a heart withering and rotting with grief in his basement. Just like that, Will begins to question just who won that last fight and how exactly he helped Vecna one last time.
