Summary
Mabel Tanaka is moving on with her life, having recently graduated from college and begun working for Dr. Sam and her team, making a future for herself in the human world.
So why doesn’t it feel like enough?
The connection she lost during the Hoppers project isn’t gone, just out of reach. She still visits George in the glade on a regular basis, but it isn’t the same. The longing to reclaim that connection sparks a drive to take it back, and once she learns that the animals that she has come to care about so deeply are in danger again, she decides to break the rules to make it happen.
The more pushback she gets from the powers that be in the human world, and the more good she manages to do while hopping as a beaver once more, the more the animal world feels like home…and the easier it becomes to justify going further than she ever should to protect it.
Because, if she feels like she’s making more of a difference, making more genuine connections, and feeling more like herself when she’s a beaver…why go back to the human world at all?
