    “Your pronunciation’s even worse than a toddler’s.”

“That’s because you’re a terrible teacher,” Phainon says, petulance in his voice thin over affection.

Only then does Mydei fully turn to his side to face him, eyeing the way the dim light seems to catch the silver of Phainon’s hair. He reaches over without thinking. “Like this,” he mutters, thumb pressing against Phainon’s bottom lip to force the correct shape. “Your tongue here,” his touch lingers. “And don’t enunciate the last syllable too much.”

Or, when Phainon asked Mydei to teach him the Kremnoan language, he expected refusal. Much to his surprise, Mydei agrees. But as the words come easier, so does everything else Phainon was never supposed to understand.

    Summary

As the blazing dawn rises, Phainon finds his way back into Mydei’s arms. In its light is their union sealed in a ring exchanged, promises fulfilled, and dreams for the future exchanged as their bodies meet, unwilling to part for even a moment.

“If we were to adhere to proper ceremony… I would cover myself in the finest oils, don the traditional jewellery one wears for what you Okhemans would call ‘a wedding’. We would then spar with our people as witnesses. A test of worth for the one to be a Kremnoan’s spouse. And then—”

    “And then?”

“And then, should you succeed,” Throbbing heat pools low in Mydei’s belly, threatening to spill over as Phainon continues his pace, gaze burning into Mydei’s body. “We would retire to our quarters and seal our union there, in blood and drink shared. Bodies meeting and becoming one until either of us tires.”

As if it were indeed the scene in his mind, Mydei shrugs off the rest of his clothing, red cloth sliding down his form like silk and pooling beneath him just as he brings Phainon toward him by the strap at his thigh.

    But don't you remember?

    We've met before.

    You said so yourself—

And it's a thought he's afraid of entertaining when they're so different from their dreams. He is different from the Phainon in his dreams—a broken boy who'd gone through so much and lost so much but who has to continue moving forward nevertheless.

He's just Phainon, Cyrene's brother, apprentice appraiser, as normal as can be.

And this Mydei a rockstar, full of life and everything he could have been with none of the death and loss the clung to the one in his dreams.

    Summary

It’s a one time thing, Phainon thinks as he leaves Mydei’s room that day. It’s a one time thing, surely it is, because that is the only way Mydei would ever allow it. A momentary reprieve, a flaw in judgment, a mistake. One that the Kremnoan prince would never allow to happen ever again.

Or simply, because Phainon doesn’t deserve another, and that the Gods surely won’t be so kind to give him another. He is content with that. He tries to be, even with all the dreams and thoughts that plagues him. Even with all the flashes of images running through his head every time he lays his eyes on Mydei — of hands, his hands, running through his chest, and of lips biting through tender flesh.

Everyone had their fair share of secrets, some more so than others.

Mydei knew this better than most. To his colleagues and to anyone else he came across daily, he was simply the solemn one. He never said anything more than what was asked of him and he never lingered long enough to befriend anyone else. No man was an island, but Mydei came close to being one.

But alone, in the solitary privacy of his own room every Thursday and Sunday night, he harbored one little secret that he would never deign to reveal to anyone else.

    -

or, what do you do when these secrets come to light-and are found out by the person you least wanted to know?
