Summary
“Pretend we don't know each other?” Shane repeats, a little confused in all honesty. Wasn't therapy about talking?
“Yes. You are meeting for the first time in this room. Introduce yourselves.”
Shane shifts in his seat, slowly turning to Ilya. It's not all that different from the first time they'd actually met; the awkward vibes radiating off Shane are almost identical. They're just missing a snowy forecast and a cigarette.
He decides to go a step further, standing up. It feels the right thing to do under the circumstances. Who meets for the first time sitting down? He takes a step forward, holding his hand out to Ilya. Or not Ilya. This random man he’s about to meet, who happens to look a lot like Ilya. Ilya takes the cue, standing from his own chair with a shake of his head. He takes Shane’s hand, shaking firmly.
“I’m Shane, uh, Shane Hollander.”
Ilya nods. “Ilya Rozanov.”

Summary
He plops down on the couch again, sets his elbows on his knees, and looks Eddie in the eye. “Okay. Soooo,” he says. “You’re asking me to marry you.”
“Yes,” Eddie says.
“On a Wednesday,” Buck says.
“Yep.”
“As a friend.”
Eddie’s nose scrunches. “Ye-ep. Just about covers it.”
“Why?”

Summary
So in the middle of Eddie’s dining room, with his brain to mouth filter non-existent (as per usual), Buck blurts out, “Marry me.”
Eddie sits straight up, looking at him with eyes wide as saucers.
“Excuse me?”
“W-well, just think about it. If we get married I can add you and Chris to my insurance policy and that solves your problem.”
Eddie’s mouth forms a perfect little ‘o’. Buck waits patiently for the floor to open up and swallow him whole.
When the ground doesn’t do as he’d hoped he realizes he has to say something else. “Obviously, w-we don’t have to,” he’s quick to assure. “But if we did it would be platonic, of course, because you’re straight and–” he pauses, praying for another rogue stroke of lightning. Anything to put him out of his misery right now. “-and like I know that I’m bi now, but this wouldn’t be like that y’know? It would just be two friends helping each other out.” He’s rambling, the words won’t stop tumbling out. “Like a friends with benefits type situation! E-except you know not those kinds of benefits! Like actual benefits! Health and dental.”
or,
Eddie is moving to Texas, losing his insurance, and marrying Buck all very heterosexually and platonically.

Summary
The fire is still growing. The beams are groaning. Time is running out.
Eddie’s heart clenches.
“They’re not coming, Buck. You need to go.”
Not because he wants to let go. But because he can’t bear the thought of Buck dying here too.
He’s already risking everything by staying.
And Eddie—Eddie doesn’t want the last thing he sees to be Buck falling beside him.
“NO.” Buck snaps. “I told you. We’re surviving this together.”
He starts yelling, voice ripping through the air.
“HELP!” He coughs. “Bobby! Hen! HELP!!”
The desperation in Buck’s voice slices through Eddie’s chest more than the crushing weight above him ever could. He wants to stop him, to tell him not to waste his breath, but he can’t. Because some part of him—some foolish, aching part—still hopes too.-or-
One call changes everything. After nearly losing each other, Buck and Eddie are forced to face the feelings they’ve spent years burying. But grief, guilt, and fear don’t make falling in love any easier. It’s messy. It’s slow. And it might already be too late.
