Summary
“You know,” he says, but it’s simply empty words to buy himself some time, to think of something better, something clever, “I think you’re overestimating our ability to cohabitate without killing each other.”
Regulus doesn’t spare him a look. James had been so afraid of the hostility, he’d never thought to be afraid of this: the distance, the empty, the nothing-at-all. “I think you’re underestimating how much I really don’t fucking care about you, Potter. Do whatever you want. Just don’t bother me with it.”
or: my 'there's only one bed' trope that got entirely out of hand.

Summary
Ray complies. How can he not? This is Heather Nill wearing his shirt, her fingers skirting over the line of his boxers, her breath hot against the hollow of his neck. He kisses her, soft and languidly, like he’s trying to lull her to sleep, to take some of the strings that wind her tight and unravel them, to suck the tremors right out of her mouth.
Heather leans into it, desperate and eager, knows this will ground her. It’s not the best coping mechanism, but she’s young and in love and she needs this, needs him to make her feel like she’s not bursting at the seams. His touch fits her back together, at least temporarily, like the kind of glue you know won’t hold, but it will at least make it better for a little while. That’s what she needs. Just for a little while. Just so she can sleep and wake up tomorrow and face a new day. And another one. One day at a time.

Summary
He parks the car in front of it, unbuckling himself. It looks empty, but you never know. Heather seems mesmerised by the look of it, unable to take her eyes off it. His expression turns serious. ‘Stay in the car, Heather,’ he says, and he steps out the driver’s side door. ‘I’ll check it out first.’
There’s an indignant huff he lets out when he hears her car door open seconds after he closes his. She appears next to him, cheeks red, hands trembling. ‘Do I really strike you as someone who listens to ‘stay in the car, Heather’?’ she asks him, pushing her shoulder against his. ‘Besides, I don’t think anyone would willingly come here anymore.’

Summary
It’s two months later when Heather first realises Ray isn’t expecting this to last. It starts small, with Ray seemingly retreating into himself the moment she mentions anything regarding the future. A distant gaze; a hesitant agreement—like telling that old friend you ran into you should totally hang out soon, knowing all too well you weren’t ever going to call. By the time she mentions maybe going on a trip for New Year’s, Ray can barely give her a straight answer at all.
If Heather was anyone else, it might have made her a lot more insecure, but eighteen years of living with her own mother taught her one thing: how to be loved without any confirmation; how to find it when you’re starved for it, when you don’t know where else to get it; how to scavenge for it between harsh words and rough touches.

Summary
Walking around to open the passenger side door, he wonders how long it will take for her to leave him. If she’d meet someone at orientation, she could break up with Ray by Christmastime. Someone funny and smart—someone focusing on accounting, or something. It gives him four months, he counts. Four months that feel heavy in his chest. He’ll take as much as he can have.
‘You look serious,’ Heather says as she takes his hand to get out of the car. Ray pulls her in until she’s flush against his body. She’s all his now, though, still, and he isn’t about to jeopardise any of that tonight. He follows the curve of her body with his hands, foreheads pressed together, like a blind man trying to feel what she looks like.
