“Miss me?” Gem whispered, a smile wide on her lips.
Pearl’s lips tilted to match her expression. She could never mirror Gem’s angelic smile. Pearl’s smile always pulled a little too high up, teeth a little too sharp, eyes a little too wild.
Gem’s eyes lingered on her mouth all the same.“You know I always do.” Pearl’s voice was much too sweet to her own ears. It was an unfamiliar tone, one that she only heard herself use in the presence of the other. “But we’re not supposed to be seen together, Gem."
Gem laughed, and her eyes fluttered to a close. Pearl could count the individual lashes. She wished she had enough time to hold the woman in her arms and count each lash, each freckle, every beauty mark that she knew existed on the other’s body.
“Yet here you are, dancing with me."

Aeri didn’t smile, but she did look up to Sangie-Appa, waiting for him to explain.
Sangie-Appa’s smile, however, was blinding. “Oh my, it snowed? We could go out and play in the snow, maybe build a snowman, or make snow angels.”
Ryung gasped, getting up to his feet in an instant, and pulling up his sister with him, refusing to let go of her little hand. “Can we?”

“The chatter,” Arthur repeated and his mind flashed to all the kindness Merlin had received from other nobles. Dear God.
