Summary
The driver’s door opened more slowly. And then—
Well, shit.
The woman who stepped out looked like she belonged on a red carpet, not a snow-covered trail in the Alaskan backcountry. Long dark coat cinched at the waist, leather gloves, lips painted the kind of deep red that would stain if you kissed her—not that Emma was thinking about that. Just…observations.
She was stunning. Regal. Controlled. A sharp edge of elegance that made Emma feel like she’d wandered into the wrong movie.

Summary
The sheriff station had taken on a strange stillness after dark—a kind of unnatural quiet, like a hospital hallway just after visiting hours. The overhead lights buzzed faintly, sterile and cold, one of them flickering with a rhythm that made Emma want to break it just to end the cycle.
She sat at her desk, back hunched, fingers stained faintly with ink and god knows what from a rushed fast food dinner she hadn’t finished. The fries had gone cold. The burger sat, untouched, in its greasy wrapper. Her stomach had given up protesting a few hours ago. Or maybe longer. Time had started bending.
Her head throbbed—low and deep, like a bruise forming behind her eyes. Her throat scratched every time she swallowed, but she chalked it up to the dry air or stress or the fact that she hadn’t slept more than four hours in the past three nights. Maybe five. Maybe two.
Everything blurred at the edges.

Summary
There are many worlds that pull her away. But there’s only one that brings her home.
OR
Her body wasn’t on the same page as her brain. It had been weeks. Weeks spent apart—Kara lost in other worlds, other stars; Lena buried in deadlines and time zones. Both of them trying not to notice the empty side of the bed. But now they were here. Together.
Kara had come back late last night, worn down from yet another Earth-1 mission—one that had dragged on far longer than it was ever meant to. She’d slipped into bed quietly, well after midnight, careful not to wake Lena. But Lena had shifted toward her anyway—half-asleep, instinctive. Her leg had found Kara’s hip, her hand resting over Kara’s ribs. And now, in the tender light of morning, she was still there. Warm. Soft. Draped over Kara like she belonged there. Like no time had passed at all.

Summary
“I found this at Kara’s apartment.” Alex’s voice is calm, but there’s something heavy underneath it. Something frayed, unraveling. “In the trash.”
Lena stares at the envelope, at the familiar handwriting on the front. Her name. Kara’s handwriting. Her lungs feel too tight.
Alex sets the envelope down on Lena’s desk. “There were… others,” she continues. “Unfinished versions. Some were torn up. Some were barely started. But this one—” She exhales. “This is the one she actually wrote.”
Lena doesn’t touch it. Doesn’t move.
Alex hesitates, then straightens. “I thought you should have it.”
Lena forces herself to meet her eyes. “Why?”
Alex’s throat works, like she’s choosing her words carefully. Like she already knows Lena is looking for a reason to shut this down. To refuse. To pretend none of this matters.
“Because I don’t know if she’ll ever get the chance to say what’s in there.”
