“I'm fine,” he lies. Everything fucking hurts, in whichever way pain can exist. The only thing that feels real is the smell of jet fuel clinging to everything. There's stubble on his face and dirt in his wings, still blending into the dark feathers well enough that no one's called him out on it yet. He's not sure if they're doing it out of kindness or ignorance.
Silence stretches between them. “Mitchell, your wings-”OR:
Iceman offers to preen Maverick's wings. Things go downhill from there.

Pete was fifteen when he met Carole at St Agnes' Home for Girls.

“One more year,” she repeated to herself, to Pete, to a world that wasn’t listening, “then I'm gone from here. I’m gone and I’m taking you with me.”
Pete wanted to believe her so much it hurt. He took another puff.
They existed in the liminal space between the sky and the ground, and in that moment Pete knew he would do anything to live the rest of his life as untethered to the Earth and all her maternal cruelty as he was now.
“I don’t want to come down, Carole,” Pete told her, what felt like hours later, though it could just as easily have been seconds.
