Summary
“Thank you,” she says, sincerely, curling up against him. Her head lands comfortably on his chest, listening to the sound of his breath and the beat of his heart. That, that, that feels like home, she thinks. No matter where she is in the world, no matter what she does, this will always be the feeling of coming back home.
“For what?”
“For believing in me. Even when nobody else does.”

Summary
Just like it happened on every other busy day, Samira had no time to stop and breathe. The adrenaline kept her spirits high, floating her from one room to another with light ease. It was a hell of a painkiller; she had almost completely forgotten about her injury.
Until now, that is, as she sits herself down to chart and finally lets the day sink into her body.
Suddenly, she becomes aware of the tightness in her back, of the soreness in her hips, and of the pulsating ache on the inside of her foot—pricking like pins and needles, to the point where the sharp sensation makes her shift uncomfortably in her seat.

Summary
After the government cut the funding for her research on racial disparity in the ED, Samira needed to find other ways to keep her project up and running. This is why she now finds herself applying to private grants that will allow her to continue gathering what she deems to be important sociological and medical data; to hopefully achieve better care management within hospitals in the future.
At first, she didn’t think she’d touch the subject again. Her whole life was crumbling to pieces little by little, one loss after the other leaving her completely defenseless and untethered. She had other things to focus on—like where she would be moving to in less than a year now that New Jersey was out of the equation, for example.
Enter Dr. Jack Abbot, ready to help her rebuild her life piece by piece.

Summary
As a chronic insomniac, he has long given up on techniques to help him fall asleep. He has tried everything from meditation to prescribed medication, all to no avail, but he still humours her from time to time when she suggests he limits his screen time and coffee intake before bed, even when he knows it ultimately won’t work.
Given his circumstances, he is the only person she knows—aside from those currently working their shift, which is obviously not his case tonight—that is willingly up at insane hours of the night. She reasons it must not be easy to fall asleep when you feel the constant need to be vigilant, no matter how many years have passed since it was a necessity. She knows about the nightmares that make it that much harder for him to get continuous sleep for more than two hours at a time. And she knows that he will find every and any excuse to stay up when he doesn’t need to. Add in his nocturnal tendencies, and it is no surprise his sleep schedule is basically nonexistent.

Summary
The drive to New Jersey is one she has made a handful of times (and avoided on more occasions than she can count). Returning to her hometown always leaves Samira with a bittersweet taste in her mouth and an unsettling feeling sitting in her stomach. On one hand, it is a place that holds her happiest memories; on the other, the longing and yearning for a better time—a time that never existed—makes her sick with nostalgia, to the point where she can’t stand being around them.
