    Summary

He hasn’t been upstairs yet but he already knows it wouldn’t be the one he’d burned the shit out of himself in, desperately trying to scavenge something to bury in place of his brother’s body, something he could mourn and say goodbye to and pretend it counted as closure.

There’s a patchwork dog in a shoebox that resides beside his mother’s corpse and he almost wants to dig it out just to put it on one of the beds up there, just to pretend that something he knows still lives in this house. But he thinks about digging Vergil out of the dirt, unearthing this boy he’s been forced to bury thrice over, and decides he’d rather rip his teeth out one at a time, actually.

The dog stays where it is, buried six feet down in a grave marked with a wooden sword and Dante circles back around to the front of the house in silence.

    ...................

In which Dante finally confesses to some of the resentment he's been holding onto for far too long and is forced to weigh which would be the worse fate: learning to let go, or holding on tighter.

Or: Vergil and Dante finally have a conversation using their words instead of their swords. Mostly, anyway.

    Summary

“Hey, Dante, catch,” said Kate, and tossed him a Pepsi can. To their surprise, Dante caught it without looking, then popped the can open. “How’d you do that?” they asked.

    “Do what?” he said.

“You just caught it out of the air!” They demonstrated for him, and Dante’s eyebrows knitted together.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I guess I’m just that good.”

    Summary

Dante choked, a little. “Holy shit,” he said out loud, and hugged Vergil back, a little awkwardly. “You really missed me, huh?”

“You’re my twin brother,” said Vergil, softly. “Is it really so strange I’d hug you?”

Was it? Vergil wasn’t a huggy guy. He tended to avoid being touched, which was fine, Dante knew how to respect people’s boundaries, but—was it really so strange that his own twin could stand to hold him? Why was he so surprised? Vergil had done this before. Right?

(no no something’s not right here something isn’t right wake up Dante wake up)

“Guess not,” Dante said, warmly, patting his twin brother on the back of the head.

    Summary

    In another world.

    (“How’re you holding up?”

Dante’s expression softened. He didn’t look much like Vergil unless the twins ditched the color-coding and diverting styles, but the eyes were the same, a pale blue-green Nero had inherited. He glanced away, then back, burying his face into his woolen scarf: red and blue and purple, his favorite colors. “Good,” he said, and he sounded honest. “Doing better now that—now that I got a new therapist.”

Anger burned in Nero’s chest at the mention of that malpracticing, lying, manipulative bastard, and he got the sudden urge to punch the nearest wall until plaster rained down. Suing the shit out of the fucking hospital was the least of it. They should’ve torn them apart. Vergil should’ve signed the death sentence of every accomplice who’d helped Alighieri poison Dante with fake pills and fake diagnoses for years—and Vergil had wanted to, God had he wanted to, shoulders going violently still when he’d finally unearthed months’ worth of buried prescriptions in that empty, abandoned office—and Nero should’ve—

    Should’ve—)

    Summary

It was then that two portraits caught his eye. Surrounded by the cheery pictures that chronicled Hawke’s life, many taken in candid moments, the portraits could not have stuck out more. They were of two men, both dark-haired and eerily pale, but one had Hawke’s blue eyes and the other one had amber eyes.

“Brandon and Walter Hawke,” Nero said, more to himself.

    “Who now,” said Dante.

“The twins,” Nero said, pointing to the two portraits. The men looked incredibly similar to each other: they had the same high cheekbones, the same hawk-like nose, even the same hairline, but one twin had his hair down past his shoulders and the other had hidden it under a top hat. If Nero had to guess, he’d say the portraits had been done around the 1800s, thereabouts, but hell if he could pin down the decade.

“What, twins owned this place?” Dante said.

Nero shook his head. “Not at the same time,” he said. “From what Hawke said, Brandon was the first. When he died, Walter inherited the place.” He looked around the corridor, sniffed, and said, “Guess he didn’t do much with it.”
