    "There was someone, when I was younger," Bruce looks down at his hands, sounding almost out of breath when he says, "I think I might have loved him,"

    Tim thinks he might have misheard for a second, but that's impossible, because there's no one sitting in the garden but the two of them and Titus. Then, Tim thinks Bruce must have misspoke, but that's also impossible, because Bruce doesn't misspeak.

    Which can only mean; I think I might have loved him.

    "Him?" Tim whispers for clarification, just to be sure. He's not sure why, but his heart is beating so loudly he can hear it in his ears.

    It's so loud in fact, he almost misses the way Bruce chuffs lightly, sounding amused when he replies, "Yes Tim. Him. A man."

    (Tim and Bernard get into an argument, Bruce tries to offer some advice.)

    Dick sounded amused. “You didn’t tell me you were coming.”

    “You should have known.”

    “Oh, I’m sorry. My latent psychic abilities haven’t kicked in yet,” Dick said. Then, as if the possibility was just occurring to him: “You told someone you were coming, right?”

    Tim made a noise, vague enough for Dick to interpret however he wanted.

    “Hey,” the next tug on the blanket was sharper, as was Dick’s voice. When he got the blanket down enough to see Tim’s face, he raised an eyebrow, repeating, “You told someone you were coming, right?”

    Or: Tim and Bruce have a fight. Tim does the only logical thing and goes to Dick about it.

    Love was not a matter of agreement, or even shared values. That is how it is with family: you can clash and argue and fight, but no one else can. No one else has the right to.

    And even after a thousand disagreements and even more arguments, Bruce remained the man who raised them. The man who grew into the role of a father for every kid that had lived under this roof.

    So if this alternative Bruce had no Robins, one could at least hope there was someone else waiting for him. Someone who thought of him beyond just Batman. It was only fair, for no Bruce should ever be alone. Even if Bruce himself most often did not realize so.

    Bats are social creatures, after all.

    Or

    Absolute Batman lands in the Mainline universe and learns that maybe his mission doesn't need to be a lonely one.

    There's no way he could pass for Dick’s actual brother and he’s got the face of a shell-shocked cartoon mouse — but not the cutesy mice, the ones in the old 80's movies that gave Dick nightmares as a child. That plus the fact the Drake kid’s got a thick New Jersey accent he can’t shake and that Dick doesn’t look grown-up enough to be toting around a preteen is sure to get people asking questions. Or worse. So Dick hauls Tim in by the strap on his backpack, steps onto the shoulder, sticks his thumb skyward toward the cloudless cornflower blue of middle America in summer, and prays whoever pulls over lies somewhere boring on the sliding scale between serial killer and snitch.

    Dick Grayson turns 20 on March 20th, Jason Todd dies on April 27th, and by May 23rd, Bruce Wayne's ward-not-son is rattling around in the bed of a 1979 Ford F-150 heading anywhere but Gotham, New Jersey. Wayne money and Bat technology can't find him, but he's got a bug-eyed shadow and a raw Robin-shaped wound to haul across the continental United States.

    or: road trip, coming-of-age, #Grief Fic triple-threat with a healthy dollop of early accidental Tim acquisition. or about as accidental as Tim acquisition can get

    “Damian... Damian, are you with me?” he cradled the back of Damian’s head with one hand and, with the other, he gently pushed his shoulder to roll him onto his back. He scanned his body for injuries. He almost flinched back.

    Instead of the usual grey colour on Damian’s chest he found red. Not blood. Red Kevlar. Green shoulders, uncovered arms and two green gloves tied together by some metallic, enormous handcuffs. Bruce’s eyes shot up to his face instantly, his stomach tightening. White lenses met his; white lenses surrounded by green, hidden under dark locks of hair, blinked back at him.

    Tim.

    Tim, his other Robin. It was Tim.

    [In Bruce's defence, if your two sons practice vigilantism under the same name and wear the same haircut and similar costumes, there is no way you'll never mistake one for the other.]
