"You don't know," Crowley said. Not cruelly. Just as a fact. "Six thousand years of faithful service and they haven't told you why." He hissed out. The boy in his arms grumbled and Crowley paused. He continued but his voice was quieter now. He was already adjusting to him.
"But I'm telling you it doesn't have to end. Not tonight. Not in eleven years. Not if I just-" He looked down at the boy. The expression on his face was strange and soft, as though he hadn't quite expected whatever he found there. "-keep him."
"They'll kill you," Aziraphale said again. It came out quiet, this time. Almost a plea.
"Not," Crowley said, looking up, "if you help me."
The fog between them lightened. The hum of the lamp softened. The blare of the sirens grew louder. The whole weight of the world they loved was sleeping in Crowley’s arms.
