Summary
His mark roughly knocks shoulders with him as he passes and Kevin is whisked away again.
He turns around to follow the backliner, the black hair creeping out from under his helmet, only an inch or so taller than Kevin, for a flash he’s in black and red.
“Jean?” Kevin asks in a whoosh of air like he’s been kicked in the sternum.
The backliner keeps walking. His uniform changes colour to green and yellow, and reality comes crashing down again. Kevin bites down on his tongue until he tastes metal.

Jean Moreau was born in the fall. He dies in it too. The world keeps spinning although Kevin wishes it would freeze.

Picking up the phone, his breath catches in his throat. “Hello, Jeremy Knox speaking.”
“Heya, Cap, I uh–ow! Can you come pick up your favourite Frenchie?”
There’s something indecipherable on the other line. “I’m at lunch right now so I can come right away,” he says, picking up his keys from where they sit next to his water bottle that he scoops awkwardly into the crook of his elbow. “Is he okay?”
“He uhhh–Jean, stop trying to get up! He passed out and needs someone to take him to the medical centre.”

Summary
Jean is asleep when the bus lurches at a concerning speed, throwing him into the window, then swinging into Jeremy and suddenly he’s wide awake. There’s confused and scared shouts from all around but Jean just grabs a fistful of Jeremy’s shirt and hauls him close. Jeremy’s hand comes up to wrap around Jean’s bicep and he holds tight. “Jean, Jean, the bus—”
He’s cut off by another dangerous heave and Jeremy almost falls out of his seat and into the aisle. Jean’s grip anchors him and keeps him from toppling. “Jeremy,” he says urgently.
A final rock and the bus stills.
Jean lets out a gasp and allows Jeremy to pry his fingers from his shirt. “Jean— Jean, I’m okay.”

He wipes his palms on his shorts before sliding into his thinner gloves, tucking the thicker padded ones into his helmet for when he’s actually on the court. It’ll be fine, he’s played through worse than an upset stomach. There’s only three hours left of practice and he can get through feeling a little bogged down.
Maybe he’ll even nap before dinner so that he can stomach it.

Jean knew, distantly, that California was prone to earthquakes. But knowing and experiencing are two different things, and while he’s become accustomed to the sensation of the rug being pulled out from under him, he is very much unaccustomed to the literal Earth shaking beneath his feet.
Or, Jean gets a lot of magnets; California gets a lot of earthquakes.

Summary
Jean’s chest tightens further. “Jeremy,” he says, as calmly as he can manage. “Where are you?”
He does not ask if Jeremy’s okay. He does not ask what happened. Both questions are irrelevant in the moment. If the answer to the first is yes, Jeremy would not have texted him that phrase. And if the answer to the second is given to him now, Jean would only be wasting time.
Time he could be using to make sure Jeremy is safe.
