Summary
Rumi touched her fingers to her ribs. She could feel the heat radiating from her skin, even through her clothes. A distant, miserable part of her said, this is going to hurt.
She pushed her fingers down.
The rib shifted.
The thing about telling one very big lie is that it requires a foundation of hundreds of smaller lies to hold it up, lies such as "I'm fine," and "nothing's broken," and "it doesn't hurt."
Rumi finds this out the hard way.

Summary
Mira locks her phone and tosses it toward the other end of the couch. She combs her fingers through Zoey’s hair—tries again when she immediately gets stuck in a tangled bit of bedhead—and then looks to Rumi.
“Wanna go to the mall today?”
Zoey immediately shoots up, and Rumi is quick with ready hands and catches her before she can tumble to the floor.
“The mall! Yes! Oh my gosh, they just released a game I’ve been dying to pick up and try out. You get to play as a little fox who owns his own bookshop, and it’s just so cute. Rumi, can we go to the mall today? Please?”
Zoey turns her big brown eyes on her; Rumi huffs out a laugh and pretends to mull it over. She isn’t sure why she’s in charge of their schedule (they’re on a break!), but she’s okay running with it for a bit.
or:
The girls spend a day of their hiatus at the mall. Rumi wins a duck, Zoey eats too many snacks, and Mira does her best to herd cats.

Summary
The woman’s eyes widened, and her hand reached out, not quite touching Rumi, but close. “Not that you’re not beautiful, because wow, you-” She stopped, a look of realisation crossed her face “-I mean, no, wait, no, you are beautiful, but I wasn’t hitting on you, I have a girlfriend-”
Rumi ignored her chest squeezing.
“-A stunning girlfriend, Mira. I mentioned her, right? My girlfriend Mira-” The woman stopped abruptly and lowered her head down into her arms. “Jeez, Zoey, stop rambling at the deaf woman.” It was muffled, but Rumi heard it.
Silenced by grief, Rumi’s world is transformed when she crosses paths with Mira and Zoey, who guide her toward a voice she thought was lost forever.

Summary
The voice was rich, leathery, and smooth, a controlled belt from the chest of the woman on stage. Mira imagined she could see the concentration in the woman’s closed eyes and furrowed brow, if the stage lights weren’t hitting her from behind, shrouding her in a golden silhouette.
Every bar was effortless. Every note an odyssey.
Mira looked at Zoey. The girl was just as transfixed. More so than Mira, even. But then, Zoey’s attunement to the Honmoon was much stronger than Mira’s. Zoey often said the Honmoon kind of felt like the Ocean from Moana. Mira had never seen it so she had to take Zoey’s word for it.
The Honmoon rippled.

Mira and Zoey are looking to relax and unwind after months of helping Celine at auditions in search of the missing link to their trio. They don't expect to find her working at a nightclub with her patterns on full display.

Summary
Rumi hadn’t meant to cause such a scene. She just wasn’t thinking straight.
Celine had told her Zoey and Mira would kill her if they found out what she was, and Rumi had come to the conclusion that she was probably right.
Her plan, as tenuous a description as that word was, was to cut the patterns out. If she could cut out the parts of her that made her dangerous, that made her less than human, that made her so unloveable, maybe she’d stop feeling so fucking guilty every time Mira or Zoey opened up to her.
They loved each other from the start, but it just wasn't that simple.
