“So help me god, Henry, if you don’t answer this goddamn phone and tell me you’re on the plane…” Alex curses under his breath as his phone continues ringing in his ear. He paces the length of his office with one hand running through his hair, pulling slightly in an attempt to stave off the building anxiety. Just when he’s about to hang up, the line connects.
“Alex? Is everything alright?”
“Henry!” Alex lets out a sigh of relief, but the relief is short lived because… “Where are you?”
The silence on the other line answers his question, but he waits it out, hoping Henry will prove him wrong. “I’m almost done at the shelter.” Henry finally admits, the sheepish tone in his voice that would ordinarily be soft and endearing now just infuriating.

In hindsight, Alex should have seen the warning signs a hell of a lot sooner than he did. Insomnia wasn’t new to him, it never was, but once he and Henry got together, anytime they slept together brought Alex the best night’s sleep he’d had in his life. When law school would get stressful, the insomnia would make a small appearance and it would take him longer to settle at night, but all things considered, his life was pretty great and everything felt like it was under control. He kept waiting for the proverbial other shoe to drop because hello, when had life ever been easy for Alex. Sure, he had a lot of privilege due to the circumstances of his life and he tried not to take them for granted, but his brain was still not great and no matter how much he tried to tell himself that things were finally going his way, he still felt like he was walking on a path lined with eggshells, just waiting for something to happen.

“Fuck off, sweetheart,” he laughs, a soundbite of the sun. Henry forces himself not to physically react, the term of endearment sweet and menacingly familiar coming from Alex’s lips. It’s been years. “You know they’re useful.”
“Ah yes, eyelashes, truly a formidable instrument in managing international relations.”
Alex grins, and Henry is too late to catch the slightest downward lilt on the corner of his mouth, “Worked on you once, didn’t it?”
Oh, did that ache.
(Much had happened since the time Henry had told Alex to leave. Alex had passed the bar, gotten married, had the most beautiful daughter. And Henry, well. He stayed right where he was.)
