“Jesus, kid.” Bill puts a hand up to the back of Hall’s head, slides his fingers up under the helmet, checking to see if the wound goes any further around, but it doesn’t seem to. Whatever it was that exploded didn’t cave the place in, just made a hell of a racket.
There’s metal embedded in the dirt of the walls and scattered around the floor. If the explosion in the room hadn’t gotten Hall then the shrapnel damn sure would have.
“You’re alright, Cowboy.”

Flashes of images jump through time to superimpose blood on the front of whatever Hall’s wearing at any given moment, dark and blooming deep – on his lips, his chin, following the curve and dip of his neck into his collarbones and down beneath his shirt.
There’s a scar that makes its home on the lower right side of Hall’s smile now, faint enough that you don’t notice it at first, thin and long. Sometimes when he’s talking, Hall’s tongue will dart out toward it, a subconscious habit, and Bill wants to kiss that scar, wants to taste the ghost of the blood that was once there.
The first time Bill had that thought, he couldn’t look at Cowboy for a week. He still averts his eyes when it catches him off-guard, ashamed and indignant.
