Summary
Everyone he trusted with his secret – Will, Freya, Balinor, Lancelot, and now Gaius – was gone. Arthur would never bring magic back to the land, and he would never let Merlin stand at his side the way Merlin had hoped he would. It was a cold awakening, years of baseless faith dashed against the fraying tapestry that destiny had made Merlin sew into his own skin, but an awakening nonetheless.
Merlin is shaken out of his obsession with destiny and his blind faith in Arthur. Arthur just wishes he knew how to get his closest friend back.

“Arthur,” Leon began, but Arthur was already doing it. He laid the sword on the ground and stood with his hands up, showing that he was unarmed.
“Now release him,” he said. He still wasn’t looking at Merlin, because if he looked at him now he knew exactly what he would find, and he wasn’t sure he’d be able to go through with it if he saw Merlin watching him with those beautiful, blazing eyes. “Release him, and I’ll come with you. Harm him, and you all die.”

Summary
What Arthur knows: Merlin, his clumsy and foolish servant, is actually quite smart. He’s also loyal, and brave, and in many ways the reason Arthur has so many good people in his life.
The goal: Make Merlin realize how important he is to Arthur, no matter how stubborn he's clearly chosing to be about it.
What Arthur does not know, yet: Merlin has magic. Also they're very slightly a little bit in love.
It's going to take them a while to figure it all out. Meanwhile the knights have known for ages, Gwen figures it out pretty quick, and pretty much all of Camelot has also known ever since that weird peasant stumbled through the gates and challenged the Prince all those years ago.
