Summary
To Rafe, Ward and Barry were two sides of the same coin.
He sat on the edge of the worn sofa watching Ward pace the study. He was voicing low hums of criticism to Rafe, likely without even the realisation that he was.
Later it might be Barry, slamming a door or wrapping a hand around his collar.
He didn't need the love to be soft. He didn't need it to be kind. He just needed the presence, the tether, the proof that he existed in someone else's orbit.
He needed to be seen.

Summary
Kelce wasnt stupid. He knew there was something going on with Rafe, he just didnt know what.
The past few weeks had been weird - Rafe had seemed almost happy. Almost, keyword. Kelce wasnt sure if Rafe ever could be happy, but it was a step up from his usual sad.
He asked Topper about it, and when he was oblivious, he even brought it up to Sarah, only to once again not get an answer.
Kelce wasnt stupid.

Summary
Rafe hated pogues.
It wasn't an unspoken thing he hid from the world - it was a banner that he waved around all hours of the day with no shame.
He hated the way they talked, the way they dressed, he even so much of hated the way they lived.
And that was why Rafe kept watching them.
It was out of hatred, nothing else. Everyone must watch them like this, he figured, as if they're their own species.

Summary
Rafe grew up without being seen - no praise, no affection, no love.
Starved for someone, he clung to Barry, his drug dealer - who at the least gave him somewhere to sleep and didn’t push him away. Rafe stayed despite the bruises that came along with it.

Summary
His true prison wasn't the cell though, it was the relentless loop playing inside his head.
Over and over again, he saw his years at Hogwarts, and with every memory that came, a wave of regret followed. Regret for his friends and everything that had happened to them.
Happiness was the only thing he could remember from that time; it was terrible, revolting. Each memory was just a reminder of what could've been.
But in the suffocating darkness of his cell, he held onto them, because they were all he had left.
