Before the sinking of the Fowl Star, Fowl Sr was involved in the suppressant black market — without the knowledge of the Butlers or his wife. In acquiring suppressants for his son, he found an opportunity to make money by distributing the drugs to two families in similar positions to the Fowls. The black market was ever-volatile, and as a contingent plan for Artemis' inheritance of the Fowl empire, Fowl Sr met with the Duke of Ormonde Charles Beresford to draw up a bonding contract between Artemis and Duke's alpha son.
The sinking of the Fowl Star left the Fowls awash in unexpected debts from business ventures that broke down, and the Beresfords never contacted Artemis. Somewhat for the best. As a beta and with Butler by his side, Artemis restores the Fowls to their former glory with fairy gold and technology.
But business can only be left unfinished for so long. When Butler is asked by Fowl Sr to attend a party in London, Butler is dragged into a world that threatens centuries of an alliance between the Fowls and Butlers.
