"You're my daughter, I'd do anything–!"

She stopped, hand half-raised, magic crackling in her veins. "…Anything?"

The Wizard locked eyes with her, silent just long enough to make it clear he understood exactly what he was doing. He nodded. "Anything."

Carl asks, “Coffee, ma’am?” and she shakes her head.

His eyebrows arch comically high and he scoffs, “What, are you pregnant?”

She doesn’t deny it fast enough, and Carl’s eyes go wide, a foghorn loud, “Stratt-”

And then he asks, “It’s his, right?” Swallows and unnecessarily adds, “Grace’s?”

There are days when Carmen misses drugs more than anything. He understood, very early on, that drugs and kitchens are like...well, like drugs and kitchens. In a post Bourdain world the pairing is obvious, cliché even. But clichés are cliché for a reason and this particular one wouldn't exist at all if all chefs were, say, weirdly good at doing voice impressions or if they all had a penchant for playing tennis. That's uncles and dudes who tie cardigans around their shoulders respectively.
