They both reside on the lowest level of the apartment building, barely an upgrade from sleep crates.

She’s to his left. Two-ten. Plays keyboard same time he picks at his guitar. She has a brother who joins in sometimes with a fucking violin of all things when they’re not too busy screaming at each other. She used to be a Generdyne corpo until they let her go or something like that. He can’t remember what all has been passed on between the too-thin walls. But he remembers enough to feel like he knows her already.

“I did not wish for this,” he finally admits, breaking his silence. The bastard dares to sound contrite.

“You– You didn’t–” Daeran splutters, indignant. Undignified. He doesn’t care. The Commander still does not turn to face him. “You did not wish for it?”

    “Enough.”

“I rather think your desires and intentions mean next to nothing when the continuity of your existence has suddenly become a subject for debate–”

    “Enough, Daeran.”

    He sounds so, so tired.

    Summary

She knows of Halsin—one survivor of the shadow curse’s fall ought to know another—but there are not enough hours in that first of their not-quite-days to share life stories, let alone life stories so long as theirs.

She doesn’t think much of him, because she is thinking about his True Soul friends, and what they might mean for this fight. But she certainly doesn’t forget his presence. He’s not a man who can be easily overlooked.

The High Harper of Baldur's Gate may be a confirmed city-dweller now, but she has not forgotten her roots. Meeting another druid who remembers the old circles, who remembers the arrival of the Shadow Curse, and who comes with a party of bright young adventurers just when she needs them, pleases and vexes her in equal measure.

“Why Elvish?” Rolan asked, trying to distract himself and quash the urge to buck up into the heat he could feel between Brid’s legs. Lír smiled at him, then spoke to Brid. She let out a groan, her grip on Rolan’s shoulders tightening.

“He likes that I have to translate and repeat the absolute filth coming out of his mouth.” Lír pinched her cheek and laughed before saying something firm and commanding. “He also says I can’t complain because I’m not even giving his filth a proper translation.”

“I think I agree, I’d like to know what’s being said with as much precision as possible,” Rolan said.

“Then you two may speak in Common like any oth—oh—”

Rolan and Brid discover that three can be a very pleasant kind of crowd.

    Summary

Rook has been dealing with an embarrassing little medical problem for years. With Emmrich as the team's healer, she finally gets the courage to ask for help.

    ---

“Rook,” Emmrich said hesitantly. “It would be, by nature, a rather intimate exam. I’m far from qualified in such matters. I’d hate to subject you to that without greater assurances I could be of use.”

“I trust you,” Rook said simply. “If you’re willing… I know that I'd be in good hands.”

Emmrich fumbled the papers he was holding, a random assortment of sheaves spilling onto his already messy desktop. He cleared his throat.

“Then I will do my best, little as it may be,” Emmrich said.
