Summary
Mizuki has spent most of his life knowing he'll one day meet a bad end; malevolent spirits dog his every step as he walks the wicked path fate has set him on, and one day the meager luck he's managed to purchase for himself will run out. He's almost made peace with it; he's scared, yes, but there is also a kind of freedom in knowing some things are just... inevitable.
He hasn't had the time to make peace with the idea that his end will cause others pain, though.
So when he finds himself surrounded by Hashimoto soldiers, both him and his kusarigama exhausted and spent, realizing that this is most likely the end, he doesn't have any defense against the way that the grief and the guilt dig their talons into his insides and twist.
He's leaving the people who care about him behind. People who will, for some reason, mourn his absence.

Summary
When he returns to Kanezaka - home - the city threatens to crush him, heavy as it is with the weight of history and grief, but he grits his teeth against the desire to drown it all out the easiest way he knows, and instead he sits himself down by the open window of the modest apartment he rents for himself, lets the cool twilight air of early morning wash over him, and carves until he no longer feels like he's suffocating.
An awkward, lopsided rabbit becomes the first inhabitant of the window sill above where he rolls his futon out every night, but far from the last, and by the time Mizuki crowds him up against the wall of Asa-sensei's old dojo and says "You like me. I like that you do. So what are you waiting for, Hanzo?" there is an entire menagerie, all lined up in a neat little row to greet him when he comes home that night, in a daze, his lips kiss-bruised, heart aching with unfamiliar... joy.
They are all still sitting there a week later when Mizuki comes to visit.

"You're coming to my birthday party, right?" he says, only half a question, like the answer is not in doubt, and it catches Hanzo entirely off guard.
"...Why?" he asks.
Mizuki shrugs.
"Because it's my birthday, and I'm asking you to?" he replies simply.
