There were few things that scared Alec Lightwood. For as long as he could remember he’d been raised to adapt and overcome any obstacle to reach the goals set out before him. Fears were just another hurdle he was expected to navigate. His entire life was a checklist of predetermined milestones on the road to a fixed ending. After following this path for 23 years he was exactly where he was supposed to be. Head of the Theta Omnicron Pi Fraternity, set to graduate with honors, then take his place at his father’s side leading the family business.
So when Jace called him down to introduce the Head of the newly established off-campus housing across the street, Alec was less than pleased to find himself facing yet another problem
Alec definitely felt his confidence shake when he clocked the man’s eyes roaming softly over his features; holding his gaze for a second too long along his biceps or the length of his legs.
Alec rushed through the encounter quickly. Eager to figure out the best way to handle his newest hurdle.
This new addition to his very short list of fears. This smirky gorgeous man with far too much interest in his eyes named Magnus Bane. And the way his leering made Alec’s heart race.

Summary
These are things that haunt the histories of most civilizations: war, famine, and strife. The tomes of the past tell stories of citizens weak with hunger while the rulers of those very lands sit plump and comfortable upon their thrones. Arcadia’s history is an anomaly among these. The shining jewel in the crown of The Autumn Vale. Since their beginning, the founding families knew they wanted to avoid the troubles they were trying to escape in the old lands. So they decided to start a council. Lords, Ladies, advisors, one King and Queen would all gather to discuss the new laws of this new found home. Each Lord would represent his own area as well as the people that lived there. Every Lord, stable boy, blacksmith, and peasant would receive an equal say in the Court Gatherings as long as they were of age. The King would take the views of his people and make a final decision. The founding families, individuals from many lands and races, came together to create the capital city of Arcadia. It is in this city based in fairness and equality that our story takes place. The tale of a love turned dark and how that poisoned affection was used like a weapon against people meant to be protected.

For a second Magnus entertains the idea of divine intervention. He thinks back to this afternoon, Alec talking about his faith with a steady conviction and a fire that lit his hazel eyes with the flickering dance of flames. The way he'd described it as, “things he knows to be invariably true, the realest thing he's ever felt"...well, it's enough to make Magnus pause. Alec had seemed so sure, then, that the answer he had was the right one, guided as he was by his ‘truth’ and his scripture. But beyond that, Alec seemed…ethereal, in that moment. Taller, somehow, with broad, strong shoulders and a light that seemed to emanate from him, pure white and blinding in the dusty air of the classroom.
Magnus might not believe in a God, but in the face of Alec's conviction? He's finding it harder not to believe in him.
