    Ilya isn’t sure how much he wants to say, needs to say, in order to get Pike to do something, he doesn’t want to out Shane, doesn’t want to take that choice from him, but no one is listening.

    “I’m…” Shane can hate him, Shane can hate him as long as he’s himself, as long as he’s Shane again, “I’m Boston Lily.”

    Ilya Rozanov, a professional dom, lives in the space between. Between shifts, between countries, between versions of himself. Control is what keeps things from falling apart. Control, and distance.

    Shane Hollander lives the life that might have been his. He spends his NLH career closing distance, closing gaps, moving toward things instead of away from them.

    When a chance meeting at the animal shelter crosses their paths, something unexpected carries between them, like a call, waiting to be answered.

     

    *This work is a remix/ heavily inspired by Wolfbird (OpalApparition), including people and locations. In my mind, a “what could have happened if they met in a different way and made different choices.” It’s sweet, has (mostly/eventual) soft landings, and features many puppies who absolutely did not ask to be a part of this, and one very dramatic chiweenie who did.

    “Why are you here?”

    “You see,” Rozanov drawls, “twenty-two years ago, my parents decide they fuck and –”

    “Ugh. Shut up.” Shane scowls. “No, I mean – why here?” why now? 

    The smirk slides off Rozanov’s face. “They want –” he swallows, bringing one arm up to drape over his eyes. “The team I play for. During lockout. They… disagree about rest of season. Tell me I stay.”

    “But they can’t do that!”

    Rozanov gives him a sardonic smirk.

    When Rozanov’s Russian team doesn’t want to let him return to the MLH after the 2012-13 lockout, Shane finds himself pulled into a harebrained scheme to make sure his rival is safe – and it might just work. Now he only has to navigate a secret pretend relationship while also facing the condensed MLH season. But needs must, right?

    The Montreal Metros didn't take the news of Shane's and Ilya's relationship well.

    Shane would've never thought that their hatred could run this deep, until he finds himself lying half-conscious on the floor, with blood coating his lips and face.

    In the aftermath, Shane tries to protect Ilya as much as he can, not wanting to bother him with his fears.

    For Ilya it feels like Shane doesn't want him anymore, which causes him to spiral.

    AU fic set after Shane and Ilya's involuntary outing. A few teammates attack Shane. Ilya freaks out. Shane shuts everyone out. The following weeks are hell. Shane has to learn to overcome his fears.

    Edit: This fic is complete but is currently edited (fixing grammar and spelling mistakes), and will be reuploaded chapter by chapter (so don't mind the "completed" date). Chapter 1+2 have now been revised.

    Why not Ilya?

    Yes, he was a complete asshole that Shane wished he could choke to death sometimes and his brother's childhood bestfriend, but it wouldn’t mean anything. It's for the experience, the education of it all.

    For hockey.

    Obviously.

    Or: Ilya Rozanov has always been Shane Hollander’s older brother’s best friend. He was never supposed to become Shane’s first everything.
