Eddie tried his best, but most of the time he felt weak, like he was being held together with a rubber band. Every time he let his son down, the rubber band got pulled more and more, and one day it would snap. He couldn't let that happen. He wiped his face and pressed his fingers hard into his closed eyes, trying to stem the flow of tears. He snorted back the snot that had welled up during his little breakdown, confirmed that Chris had fallen back asleep, went back to bed, and resolved to be better the next day. But the resolve couldn't fill the void he felt between him and Chris, and he lay there feeling empty.
Or, Eddie doesn't know how to help Chris after Shannon's death, so he goes to therapy about it

He tried to reassure her through his chuckles, that “of course it was recognizable,” and “I agree that armoires are hard to draw.” Penelope refused to forgive him until he treated her to a very thorough foot massage that night. But finally! She could do what she did best: compile all that data, cross-reference with every listing on the internet, and find her dream home! Their dream home."
