She turns back around and picks up Abby’s hands to try and rub warmth back into them. She very pointedly does not acknowledge the pang in her chest, and how much it feels like when she found her, starved and tied to a post. Then, Joel’s lessons on survival ring in her brain.
Warm the body first. Losing a finger or two ain’t nothing compared to dying. Okay? Dry heat until they are no longer in danger, and then move ‘em to a warm bath if ya have one on hand.
Abby isn’t going to get warm enough like this. Lying stiff on the ground, her eyes close as she loses consciousness again. Ellie presses her fingers to her pulse. It’s too slow. She’s still too cold.
There was, another bit of advice that Joel gave.
Now Ellie, sometimes you’re not gonna have enough blankets to get ‘em warm. Or maybe they don’t have much time. If that’s the case, body heat works well.
Ellie closes her eyes and swallows.
If she was going to go to all of this trouble to save Abby in the first place, she can’t just stop at the finish line.

A sound that bordered indescribable burst from Vi’s throat. An incredulous, shocked, choked-out half laugh. Moments passed of Vi clearly trying to find words to say, them catching in her throat, and her searching for new ones again before she finally managed to get a sentence out.
“Uh, Cait? That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard out of you. Ever.”
“I am being entirely serious.”
Vi turns Caitlyn Kiramman into an ass woman.

Vi turns once more, as Caitlyn’s admission cuts like a blade across her chest. She stares. The cell door opens with a creak.
“What?”
The woman before her has eyes like the sky, crisp and clean in a way she used to think she’d never see again, trapped forty stories down in the dark. “I fear we don’t have much time. Jayce believes war is coming. I’ve given us a bit of a grace period, but I…” she closes those eyes for a moment, steeling herself against what Vi can only hope is the weight of her conscience. Lonely months stretch between them like hands, grasping and grasping.
“Vi,” Caitlyn says. “We need to talk.”
